Located in the commune of Concón in the Valparaíso region and connected to the Torquemada substation, the Colmito thermal plant began operations in August 2008 and contributes 58 MW of capacity to the SEN (National Electric System).
Colmito is integrated into the SEN, a system comprised of the former Central Interconnected System (SIC) and the Northern Interconnected System (SING), which extends from Arica to Chiloé. Central Colmito serves as a reliable backup plant, and its operation depends primarily on market demand, emergency situations, or instability in the electrical system.
The Colmito power plant operates a dual-turbine aeroderivative turbine, which means it can operate on gas or diesel fuel in an open cycle. The energy it generates is then transported from the Colmito substation to the Torquemada substation via a 110 kV line, which is 700 meters long.
